After the railways were nationalised in 1948, British Railways started work on new, standard, carriage designs. These incorporated the best aspects of carriage design from the old companies, and made full use of modern materials and construction methods.
The result was the "Mark 1" carriage, which appeared in twelve different variants from 1951 and was the mainstay of Britain's passenger train services from the mid 1950s until the mid 1970s.
