Caledonian Railway 9-Compartment non-corridor coach No.426

SRPS Core Collection. Acquired in 1970.
Built 1914, CR St Rollox Works, Glasgow. Diagram 118.

This coach was withdrawn from BR service in 1954, when it was sold to the Navy for use at the Royal Naval Armaments Depot at Bandeath. It is in a very poor condition. Non corridor coaches are rare in railway museums, but were very common on local and suburban services throughout Britain until the late 1960s.

The coach remained stored in the open when at the SRPS Depot in Falkirk, and the body disintegrated. The underframe remains intact, although bent due to heavy corrosion on its top surface where it was in contact with wet wood.

Unless resources can be found to care for the remains, this coach is not likely to survive further open air storage.
