This is a BR standard van, based on an LNER design. It was formerly vacuum piped with a setter valve, and is now simply piped. It was last allocated to Perth in BR service for engineering trains. The extended underframe is to provide a long wheelbase, thus giving the Guard a (reasonably) comfortable ride. With the abolition of unfitted (handbrake-only) rolling stock, brake vans are no longer required for normal traffic.
