14 ton Mermaid side tipping wagon, British Railways No.DB989521

Built 1961, Metro-Cammell, Birmingham, Diagram 1/575.
SRPS Core Collection.

This wagon was designed to simplify the work of re-ballasting double track lines. A train of these wagons loaded with crushed stone ballast would be run into place on one track, and the stone tipped sideways onto the other ready to be spread and packed by hand or, more recently, machine. It could also be used to consolidate embankments by tipping material down the slope. Wagons of this type were used all over Scotland.
